The My World Program is free* for Atlanta area youth in 8th-11th grades. Students will meet monthly Jan- May 2018 to build leadership skills, become culturally aware and participate in community service. The program includes a week long trip during Spring Break to VA and Washington DC and prepares students for travel to Asia, Africa and the Middle East. The goal of the program is to develop leadership skills, cultural awareness and provide opportunities for students to discover life in and beyond their neighborhoods.

Who

Program participants are male and female youth 13- 17 years old in 8th-11th grades from all cultures, ethnicities and faiths. Students should have demonstrated leadership potential, inquisitiveness, maturity, and commitment to their community.

When and Where

Teens meet twice a month each January through May. In addition to workshops at the Decatur Rec Center students participate in field trips and community service projects as well as travel to Washington, DC, over Spring Break. Eligible students will also have the opportunity to travel internationally.

Program Benefits

Program graduates have increased confidence in themselves and their ability to think critically and effectively communicate while working with others. Teens also increase their cultural understanding and knowledge of their local community while gaining exposure to local, national and international opportunities.

– Our small size: By limiting our cohort to 10 students we are able to tailor the program to student interests and facilitate the building of meaningful relationships across difference.

– Diversity: We are intentional about our recruiting to ensure a balance of characteristics: race, gender, age, nationality etc, without regard to income.

– Future opportunities: We connect program graduates with other leadership or educational opportunities, provide international travel scholarships and offer internal positions as board members and peer leaders.
